DPW continues work on the Castro Street Improvement Project. Crews are currently working on installing the transmission water line on the 400 and 500 East blocks. The water work will continue for approximately 2 more weeks.
PG&E continues adjusting their utility boxes along the project limits. The boxes need to be adjusted to meet the new grade elevations of the sidewalk. Once PG&E completes their work on a block, DPW's contractor (Ghilotti Bros., Inc.) can begin pouring the sections of sidewalk closest to the buildings. The contractor will begin pouring sidewalk next week. The contractor has indicated he will likely begin his pours on the 500 block (East).
In coming days, crews will begin to layout the street base repair work. The asphalt that was applied to the street in advance of Pride 2014 was temporary. Although we still had work remaining (transmission water line and street base repairs), we needed to make the street safe for motorists and pedestrians. Crews will replace the damaged sections of street base prior to final paving. The street base is located underneath the asphalt roadway and will require crews saw-cut the roadway in order to access any damaged/broken concrete. Replacing the damaged street base will maximize the life of the final pavement.
Thank you for your continued patience as we make these improvements along Castro Street.
